Running with Chopsticks
Hey guys, I launched my new creative endeavor called Running With Chopsticks. It’s in super pre-alpha mode right now, where almost everything sucks — my grammar, the content, the design, etc. But that’s like 90% of the Internet anyway right? I’ll be improving it over time though, so hope you guys can check it out as things get better. Please subscribe to Running With Chopstick’s Feedburner feed if you want to get the audio embedded in your RSS feed. Also copy and paste that link into your favorite podcatcher if you want to listen to it that way.
I’m working on my crappy comics now, to go along with my crappy site. This is beginning to look like a lot of fun
Jackson West’s Renewal
If I actually believed in prayers, I’d give a whole load of them to Jackson West right about now. I know you won’t be online much, but if you read this, my heart goes out to you.
PS. I know, another personal note on an otherwise public blog. But this is a pretty important one.
Tentative ideas
One of the ideas that I’m kicking around for a topic of an upcoming podcast is a series of fake or nonsensical how-tos. As in, how to be a hipster, or how to be a successful vlogger, or how to not use the word web2.0 without irony (Impossible to do if you live in Silicon Valley). This is completely riffing on Merlin Mann’s 5ives and stealing from John Hodgman’s Areas of My Expertise. I really have no reason to do this, aside from reinforcing my own cynicism and disaffection with the world around me. Also, it’s an attempt to be humorous without really being humorous. I’m laughing already. On the inside.
But Nicole, why do you want to start a podcast? Nobody will listen to it!
I know you’re thinking that. Don’t deny it.
It’s mostly because (1) I love the sound of my own voice, and (2) I have no expectations that anybody will be interested in my work aside from me. Also (3) a few people I know have started their own renegade podcasts, which, despite being about absolutely nothing, are still tremendously entertaining.
Also, because most people tune out of boring podcasts after the third minute, I hope to make my podcasts three-minutes long each. For starters anyway.
PS. The podcast will coincide with the launch of a brand new amateur web comic. Because there aren’t enough of them in the world. Keenspace/Comic Genesis, eat your heart out.
PPS. I was kidding about (1).
Still Alive
Yes, this is the obligatory “still alive” blog entry after a month or so of severe blog neglect. As many of you know, I’ve moved most if not all of my personal rantings to my Vox blog where it feels comfy and homey, which this blog has ceased to be. This blog has become too public, too well-known, too exposed, to be of any real source of therapeutic catharsis. I felt the need to separate my personal and professional lives, because there are still too many people who confuse one for the other. I will still keep this blog alive, but it will change. It will be more zine-like, and will include reviews, insights, anecdotes, and excerpts from my creative endeavors. Those hoping to see me wax poetic about what I had for dinner last night will have to look elsewhere.
Speaking of creativity, my mind has been brimming with ideas. I’m taking part in National Novel Writing Month in November, which is both frightening and exciting at the same time (I’ll be writing a horribly cliched love story/sex scandal set in corporate America. Or something completely different. I haven’t entirely decided.). I have also kindled the fires of a creative project, and have been busy registering different domain names as a result. It’ll be a long process, as I have almost zero artistic talent, and this project hinges 100% on me having some of that. I’m also going to be starting up an uber-amateur podcast with a rather witty title (I hesitate to spill the actual title because the domain name expires in two days and I don’t want anyone to steal it). The format of the show is still tentative, but suffice to say that it’ll probably be horribly self-indulgent. I eventually hope to incorporate more people into the mix, perhaps in a series of conversations with friends or interviews with Witty and Interesting Persons.
A lot of this is still waiting serious redesign efforts and technology upgrades on my part. And it takes me a ridiculously long time to design stuff (I am not a CSS wizard by any stretch of the imagination). Plus everything will have to take a backseat during my month-long novel-writing extravaganza.
I am nothing if not ambitious.
In any case, stay tuned guys. I hope to implement some of these changes in the next three months.
