- Rediscovering WoW — Decided to temporarily put aside the level 32 human mage and start anew with a elven priest. Because it was starting to get just a tad tedious (plus, nobody to go on quests with). I had no idea how much priests rock. OMG. They rock. ‘Nuff said. (I named her Idunna, after the Norse goddess of Spring, who is also the Keeper of the Apples of Immortality)
- Key lime pie — I made key lime pie! It is delicious. Although I probably would try to make a sturdier crust next time (My graham cracker crust wasn’t compacted enough). Key lime pie is probably one of my favorites, because it’s sweet, tangy, and horribly sinful.
- Ghetto dinner — Bacon and ramen. Yes.
- Wilted spinach salad — Recipe from Cook’s Illustrated. Bacon, plus onion, plus balsamic vinegar, plus baby spinach, equals YUM.
- Rediscovering PSP — Haven’t played the PSP in months because I managed to mysteriously misplace the charger. Finally went and got a new charger, and I am back in Lumines heaven. Gotta break that high score!

Five wacky Wednesday wrap-ups
- Slow day — Work slowed down to a crawl today. Ended up uploading photos to Flickr and sending emails. And, uh, blogging.
- SXSWi 2006 — Damn, I need to start planning for this thing. There’s this whole entry about me on their site. Man.
- Free burrito — That’s what I got today for lunch. Waited in line at a new Taco Del Mar restaurant near the office, and the queue went out the door. Toughed it out, came up to the cashier, and the register broke down right there and then. As they were futzing about trying to fix it, the crew felt bad about leaving me waiting, so they gave me my burrito for free. Score!
- Empty office — I’m at the office at 7 pm right now, and it is hauntingly quiet. Creepy. (I’m waiting to go to a shindig later).
- Funeral for the Powerbook — And this is the said shindig. We will be piling up our now-obsolete laptops and virtually burn them in a virtual pyre. And sing virtual Viking songs. Or just drink beer. I’m voting for the latter. Join the crew if you’ll be around.
Five back-to-work Tuesday tidbits
- Puffs tissue with lotion — OMG. This is the tissue to end all tissues. Especially when one is dealing with a chapped mouth and nose area (thanks to using sub-par tissue paper to blow one’s nose). I swear my facial skin has healed already.
- Bloglines mania — One should not try dealing with over 3,000 unread blog items at the start of the work week. Holy heck.
- MacBook Pro — It’s been one week, and I still think it’s a bad name.
- Linner — I’ve been having my lunch consistently around 3-4 pm. Linner: It’s the new brunch.
- Lap-POP Ole! — The blogger performance event for Spanish-speaking people. You heard it here first. (Note: This isn’t real, simply a play on words and a reiteration of a brain-storm yesterday evening while clanging on MJ‘s cowbell).
Five lazy Sunday ruminations
- Americanized Chinese food — I still find a lot of it terribly heinous, but it can actually be quite tasty, and will do in a pinch. This is especially the case when you’re too sick and too tired to get out of the house, but still desire the taste of a good wonton soup. Chinese food delivery, it is teh awesome. You know what would be even more awesome? Malaysian food delivery. Oh hells yeah.
- Over 300 channels — And nothing to watch. TiVo is great and all, but I only have a few hours on there, and I’ve watched pretty much most of them (except for a few episodes of Radio Free Roscoe, which I’m saving up for until I have all the remaining episodes. Yes I watch cheesy Noggin teen-dramadies, shut up). Most of our couch time is thus divided up between surfing the following: Cartoon Network, VH1, Food Network, G4, Discovery, HGTV, DiY, and a few other random ones that catch our eyes. It’s pathetic really. I should be catching up on my reading.
- iPod bubble — I’ve recently taken up iPod-listening again, mostly due to how ridiculously portable my new nano is. And it is amazing how much easier it makes my daily commute. I take the bus and train a lot, and the one thing that always makes me horribly fidgety and impatient is all that waiting. But listening to my iPod just lets me tune out and enjoy the tunes/podcasts. Time literally flies by, also when walking for multiple blocks. As a public transit commuter, I don’t know if I can live without it now.
- Three-day weekends — We need more of them. Lots more of them.
- Home improvement — There’s much afoot here in the Hanvey household. We’re planning on a few hefty kitchen improvements, and the following is my wishlist: 1) Move in the washer/dryer from the basement, 2) Clear room for a larger fridge, 3) Add in a pantry somewhere, 4) More storage, 5) More counter space. It remains to be seen how the heck all this will be done, but I’m already planning on setting aside some cashola for the renovations.
And there you go, yet another five thunks. Decided to go bullets instead of numbered since there really isn’t a prioritization thing going on here. Anyway, I have some plans on how to spend my Monday off (I’m thinking shopping) but we’ll see.
Nicole’s Five (the debut)
This is a brand new effort of mine to “force” myself to blog more often. It’s inspired by Giant Robot magazine, and how co-founders Eric and Martin always list their “top ten” at the front of each issue (in the GR Trash section). Another inspiration was also the Baker’s Dozen meme, which doesn’t seem to be online at the moment. And of course, I can’t forget Merlin’s excellent 5ives site. I can’t promise this will be a daily thing, but almost everyday I find myself thinking of something completely mundane and un-blog-worthy. And then I realize to myself: Wait a minute. That’s the very same thing that makes it blog-worthy. OMGWTFBBQ — I reached a moment of postmodern recursive enlightenment. In a very Web 2.0 blogosphere-worldview shattering way. In the way a standup comedian makes fun of really boring things like airplane food and bad hair days. Besides, if I don’t gaze at my own navel, who will?
And so, here is the first of a regular series of random Fives:
- The new job – Many folks have asked me how I like it so far, and the answer has always been “it’s good” and “it’s different.” And it is. It’s hugely more stable, with hugely more money. Which, well, kinda makes me cautious about other things, but I’ll deal with that in another entry.
- Influenza – I’m totally under the weather right now, and have been ever since I got back from Vegas. We’re talking cough, sore throat, the sniffles, slight headaches. I’ve already taken the daily dose of ibuprofen, and the flu seems to be on its last legs. Of course, my ailing health didn’t stop me from going out to parties, and even though my sinuses were getting the best of me, I managed to haul myself out to Matt‘s b-day bash. Because I’m that much of a masochist.
- Fitness issues – The first day I was in Vegas, I actually did something I’ve NEVER done before in my life — I actually woke up early, and went to the hotel’s Fitness Center. It’s the first time I’ve ever been in a fitness center in a hotel. Yes, I actually stepped foot in that little tiny excuse for a gym (we’re talking 10 machines max) and WORKED OUT. Of course, I completely lapsed when I got back (see item no. 2), but hey, that’s something right? Right.
- New food processor – My new food processor is black and chrome. It is purdy. So so purdy. Now to figure out how to break it in. I’m thinking pie. Maybe some lemon meringue. Mm.
- Words fail me – I’m trying to figure out what to “perform” at the next Lap-Pop event here in San Francisco (it’s a blogger performance piece thing). I’m looking through past archives, and almost every entry I encounter seems either horribly obscure or frighteningly immature. I’m thinking I might have to come up with a few particularly witty entries between now and March. Blogging really does not play up my deep dark hidden insecurities that would make for such exciting performance pieces (my family across the world are now thinking “she has deep dark hidden insecurities”? which might prompt a flurry of emails and SMSes. joy.) Ooh! I know! I’ll start a Livejournal and be all morbid and broody there! That’ll be a shoo-in for sure!… Or maybe not.
Another thing I’m thinking of is getting started on a creative endeavour. I’ve been mulling over an idea for a podcast for the longest time, and I have all these ideas for science fiction short stories, snarky comics, and everything. But I’m just not motivated enough to get any of them off the ground… yet. We’ll see how things shake down.
