CES Day -1: Calm before the calm

It is currently 12:34 pm, and I am sitting in the food court of the South Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center. I just went to the CNET stage to pick up my badge, and everything is still wrapped in large sheets of plastic, with various pieces of equipment in disarray. I’m having lunch with my co-worker Kevin who reviews cars for us (lucky guy), and as he’s busy poring over the CES directory, I’m thinking of things to do when I’m not working (Oh like I’m supposed to be all work all the time? Gimme a break). I’m hoping to take some time in between meetings and blogging to check out the Big Ticket items at CES, and I’m going to see if I can meet up with some old friends and ex coworkers (fyi, most of them work for the competition).

Hardly anybody’s here right now, and getting a cab was easy. That will all change pretty soon though. I was surprised how cold it is in Vegas! It was like 35 degrees a couple hours ago. I was freezing my toes off. As we were driving along the outskirts of the strip, I saw several Asian restaurants that caught my eye immediately. Ooh, pho restaurants! And boba! And then I spotted this: Satay: Malaysian Grille. That’s right, an Asian-fusion restaurant with a Malaysian theme. Sounds really pretentious and not at all authentic, but I HAVE TO TRY IT. Maybe I can sneak in on Wednesday evening…

Also, I think I’m going to stay away from the parties this year. I just don’t see any value in it, aside from the free food/drinks. Well, okay, the Foo Fighters at last year’s Motorola party was pretty kick-ass, but.. oh who am I kidding. If I can fenagle my way into some party, I’ll probably go. But if I don’t, I’ll be in my hotel room healing my butt off in Alterac Valley (WoW inside ref; apologies).

Oh, and the free WiFi at CES bites. Note to self: Find a reasonably priced EV-DO plan for the laptop.

More to come…
