Fray Cafe: Getting Married (plus Being Married)

I attended Fray Cafe Austin 6 a few hours ago, and in another shining moment of spontaneity, gave into Kevin’s urges to get me up on stage. So I did. I went up, and told the 50 odd people in attendance how I met Brandon. How we met each other on an Internet dating site of all things, how we paid $5-10 just to email each other, how fast our relationship moved, how he proposed to me on a beach in San Diego during the San Diego International Comic Convention, and how we got married. The funny thing is how natural it felt to speak about our relationship to such a large audience, and I think it’s because it’s just one of those things that’s so ingrained in my mind that it’s just easy to talk about.

I often get a lot of questions about our relationship; about how we seem to lead separate social lives (I’m more out and about than he is). My answer is simple: if he isn’t interested in going out, I’m not the kind of partner that’ll guilt-trip him into going out with me. On the flipside, he isn’t the type to guilt-trip me into staying home with him. We let each other do our own thing — he has his friends, I have mine, and that’s perfectly fine. Of course, we also go out together quite a bit, and we have several friends in common, but hardly anyone ever points that out. There’s a level of understanding between us that no one else seems to match, and I’m glad that we’re confident and comfortable enough with our relationship that we don’t have to be joined at the hip all the time.

Plus, the best thing about traveling and going out on the town is coming back to the warmest welcome a girl could ever wish for. And THAT, is totally worth the $10 I paid, and more.

  2. [...] When asked if there was anything I’d like to do for 5-8 minutes, I figured the truly interesting and rather unique anecdotes in my blog all revolved around my interactions with immigration officials through my travels. I also decided that misery loved company, and got Nicole to tell her excellent story on getting married. [...]
