Power outage

Some time between late Sunday night and early Monday morning, the power went out in half of our apartment. It was the oddest thing; only the bathroom, closet, and half the bedroom were affected. I checked the tiny fuse box in the kitchen, and none of the switches were flipped off. Brandon later looked out the window and saw a couple of patrol trucks, so we surmised it’s probably not just us that’s having this problem. Since we still had some electricity, we were able to use the fan — a good thing due to the minor heat wave we’re having.

Later Monday morning, I stepped out of the apartment to head to the library, and the apartment’s hallway was pitch black. I used my little Maglite flashlight to navigate my way to the elevators, which, of course, were also out. So it was down the fire escape stairs I went. When I came back at around 4 p.m., I saw not one, not two, but three blue PG&E trucks outside the apartment, with the apartment manager milling about looking frazzled. This time, the entire apartment building was out of power, which meant no fans or electric cooling systems. I was close to melting. I took a shower, and then went to bed to sleep the heat off.

When I woke up, the power was back on. Brandon said that it was on when he came back around 6 p.m. However, the electricity was now being powered by a huge generator, presumably loaned from PG&E (Click here for a photo). The generator sound wasn’t too bad during the night, mainly because we kept our windows shut, and we’re higher up. I imagine it must be a lot louder on the lower floors.

So now it’s dry, hot, and loud. Well, at least we have the fan, as well as the Internet.

  1. Huge generators are the best things ever. My school has some because they didn’t want to go without electricity during the brown outs a few years ago. Yes, they have far too much money, but at least we never have to go without electricity for more than a few minutes (not that they give us air conditioning in the dorms or anything, but at least our fans will be on and the academic buildings are cool).
