I'm wearing skirt over pants this eve to a fancy NY's eve dinner because I love the utilitarian/unique look and feel of it, and because it's 20 below zero here and just getting from the cabin to the car is impossible in hose and heels, which is fine, 'cause that's why I love Alaska!

I have just recently started wearing a couple dresses (haven't done so with my skirts yet) over my pants; it does help me get more mileage out of the dresses I would otherwise rarely wear, and I feel more fashionable and cute. It's a deviation from the mundane shirt and pants routine. :P

Some complain skirts should be worn as it is (over nice legs), and others make a similar comment for pants, but both are tacky--supposedly. The right skirt and pants make an androgynous statement (seen in boy and girl Brit-punk clothing), or this style can reflect Japanese avante-garde fashion (anti-sexiness in short). Such combos can also be done for practical reasons of temporarily improving one's body type for an overall straight-line look.
Recipe for skirt-pant combo:
-long slim pants (preferably with interesting details)
-shoes should not make the pant's bottom scrunched
-slim above-knee skirt with interesting details
-individualist attitude (ex. not everyone cares for skinny jeans [or can pull it off])

I wear skirts over my pants. I don't wear it to be fashionable, I wear it to be unique. I also wear the combo because, like above, I am no good at sitting lady-like, and also because I have shirts that are too short and show my back too much, ( so i pull my skirt up higher and it takes care of that) pants that make my stomache bulge out, (i am not just picky about that, I /am/ fat, and it makes you) or skirts that my stomach sticks out too bad in. (the pants kinda squish my stomach some.)

I kinda have this pirate-bohieme-punk look, very unique and I've wanted to layer skirts even. I have this long black skirt and this shorter pink one that I think looks great together, but i don't even dare trying to wear that combo outta the house, my mom doesn't really like the skirt over pants thing to begin with. I like it because I am the only person who wears it, apart from one of my friends, who does it not-really the same way as i do. She glams it up, and has these really short dresses and skirts, and actually she was the one i first got the idea from because back before i really knew her, she was singing at school one day for a program and she was going to wear this short skirt on stage, so she wore pants under it not to break the dress code before hand. It looks really stylish on her, and it looks funky-cool on me

I really like the above mentioned syle alot! But I absolutely hate that it is a "style" and "fashion trend". Like jenn said, wearing skirts over pants make wearing skirts something you can do and not worry about jumping, running, sitting etc. For me I don't understand why one must act differently in a skirt, I still run, jump over chairs, climb under trucks etc. I am a sound assistant, and I have to look nice when we set up sound, but I can't wear a skirt and climb underneath things (atleast not easily), so I love it! Not to mention every guy I ask about what I am wearing they get all confused and ask why, they just don't understnad it. I love it!!

I’ve been wearing pants underneath my skirts for about three or four years now and took a lot of heat for it initially. My reason was this: in high school, girls would come in wearing short skirts and spandex shorts underneath for comfort and safety of not showing off too much. I wanted to wear a skirt one day, but it was shorter than comfortable and I’m not very good at “sitting like a lady" so I opted to wear something under it just in case. Stockings and tights are uncomfortable, but having been a dancer for several years I had multiple pairs of jazz pants so I tried that look and I loved it. I think it was nice b/c yes, I got to show off my skirt, but it was functional too b/c I didn't have to worry about sitting properly throughout the day. Now I go to school up in the mountains and I have all of these beautiful skirts, but it's took cold to wear just them so I’ll wear jazz pants underneath. Occasionally I’ll switch it up and put a pair of jeans under (but that's really just b/c I have to do laundry). So that's the reason why I wear it, and personally I think that it really doesn't matter what people wear as long as their comfortable. Clothing can be fun if it's an extension of you, but a lot of times it's turned in to some stupid competition and that's why I tend to avoid the whole fashion scene. However, I couldn't help but look into this new phenomenon because to be honest, I kind of resent the fact that my individual style has kind of been taken away from me and has become another fashion trend that will soon become a fashion cliché. (Not that I think someone got the idea from me, but I know now that people are going to look at me and roll their eyes, thinking that I’m just doing what everyone else tells me looks good.)

i think it's the female equivalent of the male layered look.

like how some guys wear 3 t-shirts and a shirt and a v-neck sweater so that a person can visibly see that he has on a bunch of colors and textures. it serves no real purpose and is really kind of pointless but it's just stylish when one does it right.

the only functional purpose is that it lets you wear skimpy clothing by wearing more.

I'm generally not a big fan of the look. That said, when I was in Paris last year I very nearly bought an outfit that fits the description. It was so absolutely stunning and looked fantastic on me. However, it was about gazillion dollars and I couldn't bring myself to purchase it.

LOL, yeah that look came and went with something called CHILDHOOD. You know, when a little girl wants to wear a dress, but the weather won't permit and the parent negotiates with the kid... voila. That's what it reminds me of, bc that's the only time I have seen the trend before. Seeing it on adults is so silly!
